 Gentrup Concrete History

Gentrup Concrete History

1st Gen | 1919-1951

In 1919 William Gentrup began making a name for himself in the masonry industry. In the coming years, concrete would begin to become more mainstream and was added to his services offered. While most of William's work is unknown, one is still prominent in the Bellevue Community. The stone arches leading into Bellevue High School's - Gilligan Stadium.

These arches were a part of the Works Progress Administration(WPA). A federal funded program putting millions of Americans back to work during the Great Depression. Almost every community in the United States had a new park, bridge, or school that was financed by the agency. William had help constructing these arches, most notably was his youngest son, Bill Gentrup(2nd Gen Owner). Bill was in his mid teens, a student at the school and was on summer break.

One of these arches would later be rebuilt by 3rd Generation owner, Gary Gentrup, after being hit by a school bus.

2nd Gen | 1951-1981

William's youngest son, Bill Gentrup, worked with his father and learned the trade throughout his teens and early 20's. In 1943, Bill decided to join the military and serve his country in WWII - but he needed an operation to be eligible. This is where Bill took a liking to a nurse who ultimately would be his future wife and business partner - Irma Braun. After returning from serving as a paratrooper in the Asian Theater in 1944-1945 WWII, Bill resumed working with his father. Shortly after his return Bill and Irma would marry, and take over the Gentrup Concrete family business.

Bill Gentrup ran the small business out of Bellevue, Ky from 1951 to 1981, with his wife of 62 years, Irma, keeping the books. At this time, Bellevue culture revolved around Sacred Heart Church and the Bellevue Vets. Bill's goodwill was always present whenever the church, school, or Vets needed concrete / masonry work. Most of Bill's work was completed in Bellevue, Dayton, Ft. Thomas, Newport, and Covington, with much still standing today.

In 1970 Bill was awarded Kentucky Colonel Status, Kentucky's highest title of honor bestowed by the Governor regarding an individual's accomplishments and outstanding service to the community, state, and nation.

Bill retired from the concrete / masonry business in 1981 - but continued to assist his youngest son Gary for a few years after. Bill traveled and played golf in his retirement. Bill and his wife, Irma also volunteered daily at the St. Michael's Grade-school cafeteria.

Gentrup Concrete First Truck - 1952 F4

Around his first year in business Bill purchased the company's first new truck - a 1952 Ford F4. Bill's son took over ownership of the truck in the early 1980's and had it restored. Throughout the 80's and 90's the truck was a featured in the Bellevue Memorial Day parade. The truck sat unused in the garage for much of the 2000's. In early 2021, the truck received a new battery, water pump, fuel pump and was running once again.

Bill passed away in 2008 at the age of 88. Bill's wife of 62 years, Irma passed away shortly after -  on his birthday. Both donated their body's to UC Medical for science.

3rd Gen | 1982-2021

In 1982, Bill's youngest son, Gary Gentrup officially took over the family business. Gary began working with his father part-time in his early teens and continued more full-time employment after high school and while attending college at NKU.

For 40 years, Gary upheld his father's and grandfather's reputation for excellence, quality, and craftsmanship.  Gary's concrete and masonry accomplishments are well represented throughout the Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati area, and are honesty to much too list.

Many of Gary's trained employees have went on to successfully pursue their own concrete businesses, with numerous others holding a high position for other concrete companies.

In the early 2000's, Gary was hired to fix an arch at Gilligan Stadium, which his grandfather and father had built in the 1930's(mentioned above). This arch had been damaged by a school bus.

Stone Arches

At the young age of 68, Gary still helps us pour concrete from time to time and still does some small concrete projects on his own occasionally. Feel Free to Contact Gary at: 859-393-9970

Gentrup Concrete | Chris Gentrup
Gary's only son, Chris - is continuing the Gentrup Concrete family tradition. Like his father and grandfather, Chris began to learn the business in his teens. During his 20's and early 30's Chris often helped his father pour concrete, while acting as owner/operator of a repossession company.

After the birth of two boys, Chris' priorities became about family and safety. Chris slowly made the transition from full-time repossession/part time concrete - to full time concrete.

In his late 30's, Chris ventured out on his own - with Gentrup Concrete LLC. And while, Gary and Chris still help each other, and collaborate on jobs - the two businesses are not officially connected.

After 100 years of mainly "Word of Mouth" advertising, Chris has brought the Gentrup Family tradition onto the digital scene. Hence, this website and our Social Media  sites.

In his spare time, Chris enjoys hanging out with his wife & two boys, as well as sports and fishing. Along with our concrete videos, you can also find some fishing and family videos.
